The secrets to growing sunflowers

Perfect location

For a sunflower to develop correctly and grow in all its splendor, there are several factors that must be taken into account. The first is that sunflowers bloom in summer. The location of this plant is extremely important since although it is a bit obvious, it cannot flower in the shade, which is why it is the ideal vegetation for sunny areas of the garden. But don't worry because if you want to grow sunflowers in a pot you can too, just make sure to use the dwarf flower varieties.

Sunflowers need a lot of sunlight to grow and should be planted in spacious areas to grow as much as possible. In addition, it is extremely important to protect the crop from wind and frost.

Steps to plant sunflowers in a pot

Sow the seeds at a minimum distance of 10-13 cm and 1.3 cm deep in containers. If you have a small container, don't put more than a couple of seeds. Use good quality, moist soil to plant the seeds. They take approximately 8-10 days to sprout.

When the sprouts measure 5 cm, transplant them into containers that are at least 30 cm deep. Make sure the sprouts are well spaced. In other words, no more than 1 plant per 20cm diameter container, or 3 plants per 38cm diameter container. In large pots you can place the sprouts 15 cm from each other.

Keep the soil moist and free of weeds. To protect the shoots from animals, you can use nets.

Place the container in a sunny place.

There are dwarf varieties that reach 30 cm in height and are more suitable for growing on terraces.

At the base of the pot it is necessary to place gravel or expanded clay, to ensure drainage of any excess watering. The potted sunflower should be watered regularly, without exaggerating with the amount of water supplied.
