The Pitahaya de Mayo cactus, belonging to the genus Stenocereus of the Cactaceae family, is a fascinating and beautiful plant. This columnar cactus grows to an impressive 6 to 7 meters tall, looking majestic and graceful in any setting.

Its stems have 5 to 6 very marked ribs, with a dull green and bluish color at the top of the plant, which gives it a unique and striking appearance. The areoles are found on the prominences of the stems and are adorned with awl-shaped radial spines (5-9 spines) and central spines (1-4 spines). These spines change color as the plant matures, turning from reddish to black and finally gray with a dark tip, creating an interesting visual contrast.

One of the most outstanding characteristics of the Pitahaya de Mayo are its flowers. These can measure up to 9 cm in length and have a lovely color combination. The inside of the flowers is white, while the outside is greenish, giving them an attractive two-tone appearance. The flowers bloom in the second half of summer, creating an impressive visual spectacle.

In addition to its beauty, the Pitahaya de Mayo also produces delicious fruits. These fruits, known as pitayas, are widely consumed in Mexico. They are tasty and refreshing, with a sweet and juicy pulp that surprises the palate. Selling the seeds of this plant offers gardening enthusiasts and nature lovers the opportunity to grow their own pitayas at home and enjoy the wonderful fruits.

The Pitahaya de Mayo is a perfect option for those who want to grow cacti in pots for patios and terraces, or as outstanding specimens in the garden. A beautiful garden of cacti and succulents can also be created by using several specimens of Pitahaya de Mayo in small groups.

This cactus is highly resistant to drought, which means that it requires moderate watering, approximately every 15-20 days, waiting for the soil to dry out before watering again. During the winter, it is important to stop watering to avoid rot problems.

The Pitahaya de Mayo does not need pruning or special fertilizers, which facilitates its care. In addition, it is a plant that is resistant to common pests and diseases, although it is important to be careful not to overwater it, as this can lead to fungal attacks.

The Pitayo de Mayo will do well in full sun as an adult, but semi-shade exposure suits them when they are young. It is not convenient to expose them to temperatures below 5 ºC.

As a soil, a commercial substrate for cacti or a mixture, in equal parts, of coarse sand and leaf mulch will serve us.

They are very resistant to drought, so they will be watered moderately (every 15-20 days) waiting for the soil to be very dry. In winter it is important to stop watering.
