Commonly called lady of the night or gallant of the night, it is a plant from the nightshade family. Native to the West Indies, it has naturalized in South Asia and is widely cultivated in the tropics.

Description

It is a shrub or tree that reaches a size of up to 5m high, with often pubescent, glabrescent twigs. The leaves are oblong-ovate or lanceolate, 6-15 cm long.

The inflorescences appear in the form of short axillary or terminal racemes that often form panicles up to 10 cm long with numerous flowers. The rachis, sometimes puberulent, elongates in the fruit. The extremely scented flowers remain open throughout the night.

The fruit is a globose bay, up to 7-10 mm long, white; with seeds 3-6 mm long.

Uses and cultivation

It is used as an ornamental in gardens due to the fragrance of its flowers.

Crop
Easy to grow in the tropics and in temperate climates without severe frosts. It adapts to almost any well-drained substrate and semi-shade exposure.​


Sowing: Indoors in a small pot with Soil to Germinate Hortyjardín ® three seeds at a depth of 2-3 mm, keep the soil moist (without waterlogging) and once they germinate in about 10 days, keep the plant indoors behind a window. where it does not receive direct light (no baby plant should receive direct light) wait until the plant reaches 10 cm to proceed with the transplant when there is no risk of frost. Use a place with sun and some shade for such a transplant.
