Most biznagas are found in arid and semi-arid areas that occupy more than half of the Mexican territory (almost 100 million hectares).

Contrary to the lifeless image we have of them, arid and semi-arid areas are places rich in species. This despite the scarcity of water and extreme temperatures. In these ecosystems, plants grow widely spaced and develop efficient ways of surviving.

Biznagas are plants very well adapted to life in these inhospitable regions. Its spherical shape can minimize water loss through evaporation and conserve it in its tissues by reducing the perspiration surface.

Likewise, like the rest of the cacti, biznagas have large, aromatic and brightly colored flowers that attract butterflies, hummingbirds, bats, bees and bumblebees that contribute to their pollination.

Its fruits, both juicy and dry, are food for reptiles, birds and small mammals that help disperse seeds. They grow very slowly and require “nurse” plants to provide them with shade and humidity, especially during germination and their first stages of growth.

They measure from a few centimeters to almost five feet tall. Its ribs are covered with long, golden spines arranged radially. The Echinocactus platyacanthus species is perhaps the fastest growing, as it reaches a great thickness and up to 2.5 meters in height.

The biznaga is in danger of extinction due to the consumption of citron, a delicious crystallized sweet typical of Mexico.
