The cocoa tree is a tree that needs moisture and heat. It is evergreen and is always in bloom, it grows between 6 and 10 m tall. It requires shade (they grow in the shade of other larger trees such as coconut palms, banana trees, cedars, mahogany trees among others that promote reforestation, as well as water filtration to the aquifers, also creating a habitat for various species of flora and fauna and contributing to fertile soil and soil), protection from wind, and rich, porous soil, but does not do well in hot-vapor lowlands. Ideal altitude is, more or less, 400 meters above sea level. The soil must be rich in nitrogen and potassium, and the climate humid, with a temperature between 20 °C and 30 °C. This climate and these characteristics occur in various regions of the country, we find it in various areas of the states of Chiapas, Tabasco, Oaxaca, Guerrero, Veracruz, Michoacán, Colima, Campeche and Quintana Roo.

Cauliflorous tree (flowers and fruits are born directly from the stem and branches). Its small pink flowers and its fruits grow in an unusual way: directly from the trunk and from the oldest branches. The flowers are pollinated by small flies. The fruit is a berry called maraca or cob, which is shaped like an elongated zucchini, turns red or purplish yellow, and weighs approximately 450 g when ripe (15 to 30 cm long by 7 to 12 wide). A tree begins to yield when it is 4 or 5 years old.
