Echinocereus cinerascens (alicoche cocuá) is an endemic species of alicoche of the Cactaceae family that is distributed in central and northern states of Mexico. The word cinerascens is of Latin origin and refers to the grayish color of its spines.
Description
It grows with ramifications and forms groups of prostrate or erect stems. The stem is cylindrical, bright green, up to 30 cm long and 2-12 cm wide. It has 5 to 12 ribs, with well-developed tubercles. It has 1 to 6 central spines, straight or divergent, pink to orange in color, 4.5 cm long. It has between 6 and 10 radial spines, yellowish to whitish tones and 1 to 4 cm long. The flower grows at the apex of the stems, it is magenta pink funeliform, 7 to 10 cm long and 6 to 12 cm wide. The fruit it produces is thorny, 2 to 3 cm in diameter and green.
Distribution and habitat
It inhabits mesquite (Prosopis) scrub and xerophytic scrub at elevations close to 1600 masl.
