Perennial plant native to America, belonging to the Solanaceae family. It reaches up to more than 60 cm in height. Its fruit is hollow and semi-cartilaginous, of variable size, and can weigh from a few grams to more than 500 g. Its color is green and changes color according to its maturation, going from orange to red. It requires very illuminated places, especially in the first stages of development and during flowering. For its cultivation, sandy, deep, well-drained soils rich in organic matter (compost) are ideal. Due to its pleasant flavor, it is used fresh in salads and cooked, it gives a special touch to a wide variety of dishes.
The species annuum means "annual" from the Latin annus, . It is sensitive to frost. In the absence of winter frosts it can survive several seasons and develop into a large, bushy perennial herb. The loose flowers are whitish (sometimes purplish) in color, while the stem is densely branched and reaches up to 60 cm in height. The fruit are berries that can be green, yellow, orange, or red when ripe.
