The Chiltepin or Tepín used throughout America, from northern Mexico to South America, produces very small round chiles of only 0.6 – 0.8 centimeters in diameter. The peppers are very hot and some are even hotter than the Habanero.

Tepín is also known as the mother of all chilies and in Mexico they grow wild. Sometimes germination is slow and when plants overwinter indoors, performance is usually better in the second year. Dried red peppers can be cut and used to flavor many dishes and are also delicious in soups and stews, while in their green state they can be used in a fruit sauce.

It is very frequently used in the states of Baja California Sur, Sonora, Chihuahua, Nuevo León, Coahuila, Veracruz and in Puebla, in the cities of Cuetzalan and Huauchinango, where it is used to make sauces or as a condiment. In Mexico it is enjoyed in dishes such as Menudo, Pozole or Tapixte in Veracruz, as well as any type of soup. Its use adds a very spicy touch to dishes, without making them lose their original flavor.
