Sesame seed is one of the oldest known oilseed crops, domesticated more than three thousand years ago. Sesame has many other species, most of them wild and native to sub-Saharan Africa. S. indicum, the cultivated type, originated in India.


The stem is erect, cylindrical or quadrangular in appearance. It has very variable leaves that sprout in pairs and opposite in the furrows. The size of the leaves ranges from 3 to 7 cm long and 1 to 5 centimeters wide.


In optimal conditions it is 90 to 130 days. In the first phases of growth, sesame has a herbaceous appearance. Its cycle is annual and the usable fruit is the seeds that are protected by capsules that tend to open when they reach maturity.
